Contrast Preservation in Morphophonology: Diminutive Rime Change in Hong’an Chinese

چکیده
Earlier analyses of rime change (Lin 1989, 1993) posit subsegmental affixes such as featural or prosodic affixes (e.g. [+back, +round] or a mora/default vowel) and templatic output restrictions (e.g. an open syllable). In some cases of rime change, however, there are puzzling unexpected alternations or exceptions that are difficult to explain and analyze. This study examines Hong’an diminutive rime change and is part of an on-going project aiming to provide a comprehensive account of these challenging cases of Chinese diminutive rime change (e.g. Lin’s (2008b) analysis of Jiyuan and Huojia rime change as described in He (1981, 1989)). The goals of this paper are to (i) examine the morphophonological alternations, allomorph selection, exceptions/unexpected outputs, and gaps in morphological paradigms under Hong’an Chinese diminutive rime change, and (ii) explore a systemic contrast-based approach to show how preservation of phonological/phonetic contrasts serves to preserve morphophonological contrasts within the root-diminutive paradigm. The notion of contrast has been formalized in recent studies to account for phonological, morphophonological and morphological patterns, and there is a growing body of research supporting a systemic approach to contrast preservation in Optimality Theory (OT), e.g. Flemming (2002, 2004), Padgett (1997, 2003), Sanders (2002), Itô and Mester (2004, 2007), Kenstowicz (2005), to name just a few. Examples of systemic contrast-based constraints include those in (2).

Unexpected Morphophonological Outputs
This paper examines unexpected morphophonological outputs under diminutive rime change in Huojia, Jiyuan and Hongan, and explores a systemic contrastbased approach to show how preservation of phonological/phonetic contrasts serves to preserve morphophonological contrasts within the root-diminutive paradigm. The proposed anlaysis (i) shows that contrast-based constraints can provide a unified ac...
متن کاملEffects of Phonological Training on the Reading and Reading-Related Abilities of Hong Kong Children with Dyslexia
This study aimed to investigate phonological awareness training by examining outcomes among Chinese children who learn Chinese without phonetic system training. Fifty-six Hong Kong children from the 3rd to 6th grades were recruited. Two-thirds of the children had been officially identified as dyslexic by the local government, and the remainder were considered high risk for dyslexia. The childre...
متن کاملExistential and Universal Anchoring 1 Existential and Universal Anchoring : A Case Study
Anchoring constraints were originally proposed for explaining the special faithfulness to edges, both in the domain of Input-Output correspondence (e.g. Benua 1998) and Base-Reduplicant correspondence (e.g. Hendricks 1998). In Optimality Theory framework (Prince & Smolensky 1993), this paper proposes two sets of anchoring constraints, Existential and Universal ANCHORING for edges and head, requ...
متن کاملA Production and Perception Study on Tonal Neutralization in Nanchang Chinese
In a production study of tonal contrasts in lexically stressed but grammatically stressless syllables vs. lexically stressless syllables in Nanchang, a Gan dialect spoken in the city of Nanchang, Jiangxi province, we found that tonal neutralization only occurred in lexically stressless syllables. We argue that the main phonetic ground for such a tonal contrast distribution lies in the rime dura...
متن کاملAssessing the Maintainability of XCON-in-RIME: Coping with the Problems of a VERY Large Rule-Base
XCON is a rule-based expert system that configures computer systems. Over 7 years, XCON has grown to 6,200 rules, of which approximately 50% change every year. While the performance of XCON is satisfactory, it is increasingly becoming more difficult to change. With the goal of facilitating maintenance, DEC has developed a new rule-based language, RIME, in which the successor to XCON, XCON-in-RI...
